Weight Gain and Sleep Apnea
One of the consequences of sleep apnea is a sudden weight gain. Studies show that weight gain and sleep apnea are related because the less we sleep the more we at at risk of having obesity.
Excess weight plays a major role in sleep apnea, in fact it is one of the common causes But as a cause it can also become a consequence, so once the person has sleep apnea, he or she will be more prone to adding pound after pound.
This could also be like one thing leading to another: the less we sleep, the less energy we have, the less activity we have.
The Link Between Our Sleeping Hours and Our Weight
Further studies have shown that the number of hours of sleeping can determine our excess weight. And it has nothing to do with other factors such as age, physical activity or emotional state.
It seems that one of the factors of obesity is leptin, an hormone that supress appetite and grehlin, an hormone that is involved in regulating our weight and in increasing our food intake. When you don't sleep well enough, more grehlin is produced and leptin levels are lowered.
If you suspect you have sleep apnea it is very important to visit a doctor and go under some testing. There are ways to overcome this disorder, but first you must get a proper diagnose. It can very hard for you to know if you have sleep apnea by yourself, so ask your partner or family to help you determine the symptoms while you sleep.
