Sleep Apnea Surgery

Sleep apnea treatments are varied and will depend greatly on the medical history and other data of the patient. Sometimes the last resort towards getting a cure is going under sleep apnea surgery.

Nowadays it is common to find in many products that claim to end the necessity of any type of sleep apnea surgery. These products are sometimes aimed at snoring and when used without proper research can pose a threat to your health, because your sleep apnea could evolve into a more severe disorder.

Types of Sleep Apnea Surgery

  • Tonsillectomy / Adenoidectomy. This surgery is aimed at removing the tonsils and / or the adenoids, people with enlarged tonsils and adenoids have trouble sleeping through the night because of air passage obstructions.

  • Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty. This big-named surgery is performed to remove any excess tissue that is blocking the airways. This is the most common type of surgery for sleep apnea.

  • Tracheostomy. This is another surgery that might be helpful for sleep apnea sufferers, in this procedure, a hole is created in the trachea and then a tube is used to bring air. This surgery is only used when you have ran out of options.

  • Bariatric surgery. This is a surgery aimed at people who are obese. In their cases the excess weight is contributing to blocking the airways.

Sleep Apnea Surgery in Children

Children who suffer from sleep apnea and need surgery, are treated with tonsillectomy or adenoidectomy. This is because the primary reason for having apnea in children is enlarged tonsils and adenoids.
